As Walsh Brothers began construction on the new Spaulding Rehab building on the site of the old Charlestown Navy Yard, some unusual wood timbers were uncovered. It was noted that they had numbers carved in them and this raised questions as to what they could be. An expert from Mystic Seaport in Connecticut was consulted and it was determined these were timbers used in shipbuilding that had been preserved in the mud. By coincidence, America's oldest whaling vessel was in the process of being restored in the drydock in Mystic Seaport and these timbers were exactly what was needed to complete the task.
Walsh Brothers documented this story in a book that shows the timbers as they were discovered and how they were integrated into the restoration process. When the restoration was completed in the summer of 2014, the ship sailed up to Boston Harbor and Spaulding Rehab to pay tribute to those who had hel[ped provide the valuable material for its restoration.
